The Accounting/Finance Manager is responsible for overseeing and managing all financial activities for a construction/roofing/trades company. This includes financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, cost management, financial analysis, and compliance with industry regulations. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in accounting and finance within the construction industry, with strong skills in project costing, contract management, and financial reporting. They will work closely with the owner and serve as the financial representative of the Management Team.

The candidate must be able to manage staff and serve as the “go-to” for all financial and regulatory matters facing the company. Strong leadership skills are required as the company pursues an aggressive growth campaign. The candidate must also have sufficient experience to serve as a liaison for HR-related issues. Professionalism and confidentiality are essential skills.

Working Conditions
– The role typically operates in an office environment but may require occasional site visits to project locations.

Job Duties

Financial Reporting & Analysis
– Prepare accurate and timely financial statements, including balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and cash flow reports. Timeliness will be key in this area.
– Conduct detailed financial analysis to assess profitability, cost structures, and financial performance.
– Monitor and ensure accurate project costing, including labor, materials, and overhead allocation.
– Assist in the development and maintenance of internal operational and sales performance reporting.

Budgeting & Forecasting
– Lead the budgeting and forecasting process for the company, working closely with project managers and senior leadership to ensure financial goals are met.
– Prepare and manage annual, quarterly, and monthly forecasts, updating financial projections based on current project progress and changing market conditions.

Project Costing & Job Tracking
– Track and report on costs for individual projects, ensuring accurate accounting for materials, labor, subcontractors, and other project expenses.
– Work with managers to ensure that projects stay within budget, adjusting forecasts as needed.
– Perform cost analysis to identify potential risks or areas for cost savings across multiple projects.

Cash Flow Management
– Oversee cash flow management for the company, ensuring that funds are allocated efficiently to meet project requirements and financial obligations.
– Provide oversight and follow-up for insurance approval management.
– Manage cash flow forecasts to ensure sufficient liquidity for operational needs and project completion.

Compliance & Internal Controls
– Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, as well as industry standards, in all financial operations.
– Maintain strong internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure the integrity of financial records.
– Manage staff and coordinate adequate segregation of duties and oversight of the control environment.

Contract Management & Billing
– Review and manage contracts with clients, subcontractors, and vendors to ensure financial terms are accurately reflected in the accounting system.
– Oversee billing processes, including progress billing, change orders, and final invoices to clients.
– Coordinate with legal and project management teams to ensure contractual obligations are met and payments are collected timely.
– Provide oversight of accounts receivable (AR), accounts payable (AP), and payroll processing on a scheduled basis.

Team Leadership & Development
– Supervise and mentor accounting/finance team members, providing guidance on accounting practices, project-specific financial issues, and career development.
– Promote a culture of collaboration and high performance within the finance and project teams.
– Take responsibility for team growth as needed, aligned with company expansion.

Financial Strategy & Support
– Provide financial guidance and strategic insights to senior management and project leaders.
– Assist in decision-making by presenting clear and concise financial reports and recommending cost-effective financial strategies for the company.

Job Requirements

Education:
– Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; a Master’s degree or professional certifications (e.g., CPA, CMA) are preferred.

Experience:
– Minimum of 3-7 years of experience in accounting or finance, preferably 2 years in a construction-related industry or project-based environment.
– Strong knowledge of construction accounting principles (e.g., job costing, change orders, progress billing).
– Experience with financial software and ERP systems (e.g., QuickBooks Online and construction ERP software).
– Knowledge of construction contract law, lien laws, and other relevant industry regulations.

– Ability to manage multiple priorities and work in a fast-paced environment.

Certifications:
– CPA, CMA, or similar certifications are preferred but not required.
