Advanced Employment Services is seeking a dependable and hardworking Yard Laborer to join a busy structural steel fabrication and construction team in Billings, Montana. This position is responsible for maintaining an organized yard, preparing materials for fabrication and delivery, loading and unloading steel products, and supporting shop and field operations.
The ideal candidate enjoys working outdoors, is comfortable performing physically demanding work, and understands the importance of safety, organization, and teamwork in a fast-paced industrial environment. The company specializes in structural steel fabrication, custom fabrication, welding, and steel erection for commercial and industrial projects throughout Montana.
Job Duties
Material Handling
– Load and unload structural steel, pipe, plate steel, and fabricated materials.
– Organize steel inventory within the yard.
– Stage materials for fabrication, shipping, and installation crews.
– Assist with receiving incoming deliveries and verifying materials.
– Move steel safely throughout the yard using proper lifting techniques and equipment.
– Secure loads for transportation when needed.
Yard Operations
– Maintain a clean, organized, and safe yard.
– Keep storage areas free of debris and hazards.
– Sort and organize steel by size, project, and material type.
– Assist with inventory counts and material tracking.
– Perform general yard cleanup throughout the day.
– Remove scrap steel and properly dispose of waste materials.
– Maintain clear access routes for equipment and delivery trucks.
Equipment Operation
– Safely operate or assist with:
– Forklifts
– Overhead cranes (training provided if needed)
– Magnetic lifting devices
– Material carts
– Hand trucks
– Pallet jacks
– Power tools
– Grinders
– Cutting tools
– Hand tools
– Perform daily equipment inspections and report maintenance concerns immediately.
Shop Support
– Assist welders and fabricators by preparing materials.
– Grind, clean, and prepare steel components.
– Measure and identify steel materials.
– Deliver materials between the yard and fabrication shop.
– Assist with packaging completed projects for shipment.
– Help maintain shop cleanliness and organization.
General Labor
– Lift, carry, and move heavy steel products throughout the workday.
– Assist with loading customer pickups and delivery trucks.
– Perform basic maintenance on yard equipment as assigned.
– Follow all OSHA regulations and company safety policies.
– Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
– Complete additional duties as assigned by supervisors.
Job Requirements
– Previous experience in construction, manufacturing, steel fabrication, warehouse, or general labor preferred.
– Forklift experience is a plus.
– Experience working around heavy equipment and construction materials is beneficial.
– Ability to safely follow directions and work independently.
– Strong work ethic and dependable attendance.
– Positive attitude and willingness to learn.
– Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
– Mechanical aptitude is a plus.
Physical Requirements
– This is a physically demanding position requiring the ability to:
– Lift 75 pounds or more on a regular basis.
– Carry, push, and pull heavy steel materials.
– Stand and walk for the duration of the shift.
– Frequently bend, squat, kneel, climb, and reach.
– Work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind.
– Perform repetitive lifting and manual labor throughout an 8-hour shift.
Requirements
– Reliable transportation to and from work.
– Valid driver’s license preferred.
– Ability to pass pre-employment screening.
– Strong employment history with verifiable references preferred.
– Commitment to workplace safety and quality workmanship.
– Ability to report to work consistently for the scheduled Monday through Friday, 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM shift.
